Solution-Focused Therapy Counselling

(In-Person and Online Counselling for Adults, Seniors, and Late Teens)

When You’re Ready to Focus on What’s Next

Sometimes we get so caught up in what’s wrong that we forget to ask, “What’s possible?”

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) helps you shift from analyzing problems to creating solutions.
Instead of dwelling on what isn’t working, we focus on what is — your strengths, your resources, and your next steps.

This approach is empowering, practical, and forward-looking. It’s ideal for people who want progress without getting lost in the past.

What is Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-Focused Therapy is a brief, goal-directed form of counselling that emphasizes solutions rather than problems.
Developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, SFT believes that you already have the tools you need for change — you just need help recognizing and activating them.

Through guided conversation and reflection, you’ll learn to:

  • Clarify what you truly want to change

  • Identify times when the problem was smaller or absent

  • Recognize existing strengths and coping skills

  • Build small, achievable steps toward your ideal outcome

  • Develop a vision of the future that feels both hopeful and realistic

It’s about progress — not perfection.

How Solution-Focused Therapy Works

SFT sessions are collaborative, structured, and energizing. Together, we’ll define what “better” looks like for you and create a clear roadmap to get there.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Clarify Your Goal: We start by defining your desired outcome — what would your life look like if the problem was solved?

  2. Explore Strengths: We identify the skills, qualities, and supports that have already helped you cope.

  3. Find Exceptions: We look at moments when the problem was less intense — and what worked during those times.

  4. Create Steps Forward: You’ll leave each session with clear, actionable goals that move you closer to your desired change.

  5. Build Momentum: As small changes compound, confidence and motivation naturally grow.

You’ll begin to see that the answers you’ve been searching for have been within you all along.

What Solution-Focused Therapy Can Help With

SFT is a flexible and effective approach for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Anxiety, stress, and burnout

  • Low motivation or confidence

  • Life transitions and decision-making

  • Relationship or communication challenges

  • Workplace or career stress

  • Depression or emotional stagnation

  • Goal-setting and personal growth

Because it’s forward-focused, SFT is also well-suited for clients who want short-term, impactful counselling with measurable progress.

Why Solution-Focused Therapy Works

SFT works by training your brain to focus on progress instead of problems.
When we continually analyze what’s wrong, our nervous system stays in survival mode — but when we focus on solutions, we shift into creativity and growth.

This approach helps you:

  • Build confidence and optimism

  • Strengthen resilience and self-efficacy

  • Replace rumination with purposeful action

  • Increase clarity and focus

  • Experience real change in a shorter time frame

The more you notice what’s working, the more possibilities begin to open up.

A Strength-Based and Encouraging Approach

At Pierre Begrand Counselling, I use Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients create practical, meaningful change — without overwhelming them with complex theory or endless analysis.

Our sessions focus on clarity, action, and empowerment.
You’ll gain insight, but you’ll also leave with real steps you can apply right away.

Sessions may include:

  • Vision-building exercises (“What would life look like if things improved?”)

  • The Miracle Question (a classic SFT tool to reveal hidden solutions)

  • Strength identification and reflection

  • Goal-mapping and weekly progress tracking

  • Positive reframing and resilience-building tools

The aim isn’t to ignore your challenges — it’s to help you move through them more effectively, with hope and purpose.

Who Solution-Focused Therapy Is For

SFT may be the right fit if you:

  • Want a clear, action-oriented approach to counselling

  • Prefer focusing on the future rather than revisiting the past

  • Are navigating change and need structure and direction

  • Want to strengthen motivation, confidence, or problem-solving skills

  • Are looking for short-term, impactful sessions

You don’t have to have all the answers — just a willingness to explore what’s already working and build from there.

Why Work With Me

As a Registered Professional Counsellor, I combine Solution-Focused Therapy with a grounded, practical approach that fits real life.
Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in trades and grew up on a farm — experiences that taught me how to problem-solve, adapt, and build solutions one step at a time.

Now, I help clients apply that same mindset in counselling — focusing on progress, possibility, and sustainable change.
My sessions are calm, encouraging, and designed to leave you feeling lighter and more capable each time we meet.

Focus on Solutions. Build Momentum. Move Forward.

You don’t need to have everything figured out — you just need to start where you are.
Solution-Focused Therapy helps you see what’s working, take small steps forward, and build lasting confidence along the way.
