About Pierre

Understand What Keeps Happening. Learn How to Respond Differently.

You may already know what happens when life becomes difficult.

Maybe you overthink, become overwhelmed, shut down, people-please, or find yourself repeating emotional or relationship patterns that you know are not helping.

You may even understand some of these patterns intellectually, yet still find yourself getting pulled into them when you are anxious, hurt, overwhelmed, or triggered.

The harder question is often:

Why does this keep happening—and how do I actually change it?

I’m Pierre Begrand, a trauma-informed Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

I work with adults who want to better understand what is happening beneath the surface of their struggles while developing practical ways to respond differently in everyday life.

Looking Beneath the Surface

I don't believe every difficult reaction is simply a problem that needs to be eliminated.

Often, there is a larger pattern underneath it.

Something happens.

Your mind interprets what is happening.

Your body and nervous system respond.

Emotions arise.

And before you have had much time to think, an automatic response can take over.

That response might look like anxiety, avoidance, anger, shutting down, reassurance-seeking, overthinking, people-pleasing, withdrawing, or something entirely different.

Rather than only asking:

“How do I stop doing this?”

we become curious about what is happening underneath it.

We may explore:

  • What tends to trigger the pattern?

  • What does your mind tell you in those moments?

  • What happens emotionally and physically?

  • What might be underneath the reaction?

  • What might this response be trying to protect you from or help you manage?

  • What would a healthier response look like now?

Understanding the pattern gives us somewhere meaningful to begin.

But understanding is only the beginning.

Notice → Understand → Regulate → Interrupt → Choose

Much of my work follows a simple process:

Notice what is beginning to happen.

Understand what may be driving the reaction.

Regulate what is happening emotionally and physically.

Interrupt the automatic response before it completely takes over.

Choose a response that better reflects what you need, value, or want for your life.

Insight matters, but understanding a pattern does not automatically change it.

The goal is to become better at recognizing the pattern earlier so you have more opportunity to work with it rather than simply being carried by it.

Over time, this can create more space between what happens to you and how you respond.

And within that space, greater choice becomes possible.

What Counselling With Me Is Like

My counselling style is active, collaborative, conversational, practical, and holistic.

I'm here to listen carefully, but I'm also here to help you make connections, identify patterns, ask meaningful questions, and develop practical ways of working with what you are experiencing.

Sometimes we may slow something down and understand it more deeply.

Sometimes we may recognize a pattern that keeps repeating.

Sometimes we may explore earlier experiences that help explain why something feels so powerful today.

Sometimes we may pay attention to what is happening in your body and nervous system.

And sometimes you simply need a practical strategy you can begin using this week.

Because our experiences do not exist only in our thoughts, I take a mind–body approach that considers emotions, physical sensations, nervous-system responses, relationships, beliefs, behaviours, identity, values, and meaning.

Depending on your needs, our work may draw from evidence-informed psychological approaches, mindfulness, somatic awareness, cognitive and behavioural strategies, acceptance-based approaches, emotional exploration, and solution-focused counselling.

There is no single formula. We focus on what is useful for you.

The Goal Is Greater Self-Trust

I don't believe the purpose of counselling is to make you dependent on counselling forever.

I want what we work on together to gradually become something you can carry into your own life.

The goal is to help you become increasingly able to recognize what is happening inside you, understand what you need, regulate yourself more effectively, communicate more clearly, and make decisions you trust.

Instead of remaining caught in:

“Why am I like this?”

you may gradually reach a place where you can say:

“I can see what's happening. How do I want to respond?”

That shift—from automatic reaction toward greater awareness and choice—is an important part of the work.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I grew up in rural Saskatchewan on a livestock/grain farm and experienced my own mental health challenges as a young man.

My own experience with counselling showed me how powerful it can be to slow things down, look beneath our reactions, and begin understanding ourselves differently.

That experience became part of what drew me toward counselling, personal development, mindfulness, and mind–body work.

It also shaped something I continue to bring into my practice today:

You are more than the patterns you have learned.

Patterns can be understood.

Responses can change.

And greater self-awareness can create possibilities that are difficult to see when you are simply trying to cope, protect yourself, or get through the day.

Could We Be a Good Fit?

My approach may resonate with you if you are looking for counselling that:

  • goes deeper than symptom management

  • helps you understand why certain reactions or patterns keep repeating

  • combines psychological exploration with practical tools

  • considers both the mind and body

  • feels collaborative and engaged

  • helps you develop greater self-awareness, regulation, confidence, and self-trust

You do not need to know exactly what is wrong or have everything figured out before reaching out.

Sometimes simply knowing:

“I don't want to keep feeling or responding this way.”

is enough of a place to begin.

Start With a Conversation

Choosing a counsellor is personal, and it is important that the relationship and approach feel right for you.

I offer a free 20-minute discovery call where we can briefly talk about what has been happening, what you would like help with, and whether my approach feels like a good fit for what you need.

You don't need to prepare anything or know exactly what to say.

We'll simply start with what brought you here.

I offer in-person counselling in downtown Saskatoon as well as online counselling.

Not sure what to say? That's okay. We'll start with what brought you here.
